Objectives

Sussex Pathways is a criminal justice charity based in Lewes, East Sussex. We work within prisons and communities with the aim of reducing offending behaviours and empowering ex-offenders to make positive life choices. Our team is comprised of staff, trustees, and volunteers. We work with offenders and victims of crime primarily within Sussex, but are able to facilitate out of area work when capacity allows.

We received the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in June 2021.

Activities

Sussex Pathways currently offers programmes to support both male and female prison leavers and Restorative Justice.

Through The Gate - TTG

Through the Gate (TTG) is a voluntary mentoring service offering tailored support to offenders, before and after release, and to ex-offenders already in the community.

The service is geared towards those who want to make positive choices in their lives outside.

TTG is designed for anyone who needs support in preparing for release from prison, subject to a full risk assessment, and dependent on our capacity. We focus on: -

  • Residents coming up for release who are returning to Sussex

  • Ex-residents already in the Sussex area

  • Residents of HMP Lewes

  • Referrals from beyond Sussex – capacity permitting

Participation in TTG is voluntary.  If clients disengage with our services, it doesn’t prevent them from making another referral in future.  We don’t offer support based on an applicant’s chances of success; anyone can reach out when they need us.

Pathways to Change

Pathways to Change (PTC) is a weekly life skills group designed to help prison residents to prepare for a successful release.

It is structured around the Seven pathways to Rehabilitation, factors recognised by government as those which can influence whether a client re-offends.

PTC is designed for residents who are within six months of their prison release date.  It is also for vulnerable residents who need peer support to make positive changes.

Restorative Justice

At Sussex Pathways, we facilitate restorative justice both inside prison and in the community. RJ can be a powerful process, and Sussex Pathways is proud to be part of the Sussex Restorative Justice Partnership and able to deliver this service.

Sussex Pathways are now RJ Registered Accredited Trainers with the Restorative Justice Council (RJC) under the name ‘Insync Pathways’. Our 4 day course is approved by the RJC.
