The Ramblers is a charity whose goal is to protect the ability of people to enjoy the sense of freedom and benefits that come from being outdoors on foot.
We’re an association of people and groups who come together to both enjoy walking and other outdoor pursuits and also to ensure that we protect and expand the infrastructure and places people go walking. The aims are therefore:
Sussex Area covers both East and West Sussex, for which there are nine separate groups.
Sussex area groups provide organised walks across Sussex on a regular basis, aimed at enjoying the benefits of the fabulous countryside that Sussex has to offer. Most groups have two or three walks per week, led by trained walk leaders.
Across East and West Sussex we have designated local footpath secretaries who monitor the condition of our rights of way network in each Parish and work with the local council's rights of way team to ensure footpaths are fit for use and properly signposted and maintained.
Other activities include monitoring countryside issues which may impact on Rights of Way and/or the enjoyment of the natural environment. Primarily this involves reviewing of planning applications and intervening where considered necessary.
We also get involved in wider activities, such as maintaining long distance paths (e.g. Sussex Border Path, Sussex Diamond Way); helping to establish the new English Coastal Path in Sussex; and claiming historic rights of way which are missing from the definitive map (the Don't Lose your Way project).
Groups also have their own social activities and programmes.
