Objectives

We believe that when students are supported to tackle social challenges, learn about issues and connect with each other, both communities and students benefit. Student social action creates positive change now and in the future, enhancing communities and equipping young people to become active citizens for life.

Vision: Our vision is a society in which every student engages with social and environmental challenges during their time at university, empowering them to become active citizens for life.

Mission: Our mission is to mainstream student social action, supporting a new generation of active citizens to achieve positive change now and in the future.

In 2016-17:

  • We delivered high quality social action activities that developed students' skills and directly supported local communities. 2,322 students took part in our opportunities.
  • We worked with more students who have never taken part in social action than ever before. 36% of student volunteers had not been involved in social action before.

  • We developed our programmes to meet the needs of tomorrow’s leaders. 94% of students improved their ability to work with others to make change.

Activities

We provide all sorts of ways for students to engage with social and environmental challenges during their time at university, empowering the next generation of citizens to start making a difference today. In particular we run volunteering, skilled placements and incubation support.

  • Student-led volunteering is a key component in our theory of change. Practical social action connects students with the world outside the university bubble. It offers them the opportunities and skills to make a real difference today, as well as in their future lives and careers. Across our network of Hubs, student leaders run a range of volunteering projects. They address challenges such as social isolation amongst older people, educational disadvantage, homelessness and food waste. Find out more here.

  • We support students to gain the skills and experience that will enable them to become the social leaders of tomorrow. Through our two core programmes, the Social Impact Internship Scheme and the Social Innovation Programme, students develop their abilities by working with socially impactful organisations during term time and over the summer. Find out more here.

  • Our Incubation programme helps students to get their ideas off the ground – whether they want to set up a social enterprise, awareness raising campaign or community volunteering project. Find out more here.
