Scouting is all about helping young people aged 6-25 to fulfil their potential. It helps them to develop resilience, independence and leadership skills in a fun and supportive environment. With circa 600 youth members we have a dedicated team of almost 200 adult volunteers who support them who also have the opportunity to learn, grow and develop new skills.
As a fully inclusive organisation we provide opportunities for young people from all backgrounds. A 2016 study linked youth involvement in Scouting to better mental health in later life and we strive to make sure that we can offer Scouting to as many young people in our area as we can.
We support 9 Scout groups and 3 Explorer Scout units to deliver fun and adventurous activities to our young people. This includes ensuring that adults have access to training opportunities, safety and safeguarding requirements are met and that the leaders are well placed to give our young people the very best opportunities. Our support also extends to identifying opportunities to grow and offer Scouting to more young people. From time to time we also directly organise large scale activities to allow the young people to take part on a bugger scale. These activities vary from sports days and activity days through to adventure camps.
We also run a specialist Scout Active Support Unit, Stockton, Thornaby & District Scout Communications team. This is a group of adult volunteers who provide specialist communications and event support to all manner of events both inside Scouting and with the wider community. They can be found at all sorts of events including, camps, hikes, day events, fetes, national and international sporting events and so much more!
Finally, we run a successful Scout campsite. The site is available to Scouts, Guides and Duke of Edinburgh award participants from both our District and from all over the country attracting over 1000 visitors each year. With camping and adventure such an essential part of Scouting we run a programme of maintenance and improvements to help ensure that this site is there for the benefit of our young people on an ongoing basis.
