Objectives

Steamship Shieldhall Charity objects are:

  • To conserve, maintain, operate and exhibit for the public benefit the Steamship Shieldhall.,
  • To advance the education of the public in all aspects of British maritime heritage and particularly steam-powered ships and heritage vessels of historic and technical interest, in particular by providing trips, activities, opportunities, events and training days for schools, colleges, uniformed youth organisations, special interest groups, other educational organisations of all types and the general public, alongside and at sea.

Activities

Steamship Shieldhall is the country’s last operational steam powered cargo and passenger ship. A unique ship of pre-eminent national significance, a fact recognised by her inclusion as just one of 200 vessels forming the National Historic Fleet, equivalent to a Grade 1 Listed in building terms and therefore an important part of the UK’s maritime heritage.

The charity benefits from goodwill contributions amounting to over £500,000 p.a., this is essential in order  to keep the ship in classification  as a passenger ship, provide seagoing experience for the general public,  as a training facility for youth organisations and steam experience for engineers. We are unable to operate with goodwill alone and £150,000 income is required every year.
