Objectives

The main objective, or mission, of St. Andrews Preservation Trust is to "preserve the amenities and historic character of St. Andrews and its neighbourhood for the benefit of the public; to promote them and show why they are important"  As an ancient Royal Burgh with a long history, a vital place in Scotland's story and a multitude of historically significant buildings, St. Andrews is both a unique and dynamic place.  Whilst the past is important, the Trust does not focus solely on this but is also concerned that new developments should result in a legacy which will be valued by future residents and visitors to St. Andrews.  Our strapline summarises our purpose - "Preserving the Past - Planning for the Future"

Activities

St. Andrews Preservation Trust is a membership organisation which relies heavily on volunteers in all aspects of its work.  Our volunteers assist in the running of a museum which offers both permanent displays and temporary exhibitions about the social history of St. Andrews.  They are also involved in caring for our wide-ranging collections of artefacts, documents and photographs some of which are regularly used for research into family history and other topics associated with everyday life in the town in the past.  The museum is housed in a 16th century building, itself of interest to visitors, and also offers a garden, often referred to as a quiet oasis in this historic part of the town.   Regular talks and events take place, appealing to both visitors and local people alike.  Storytelling and other children's activities also feature, and access to the museum itself is free.  All these are designed to share information about St. Andrews' past with both members and the public.

The Trust also comments on planning applications where appropriate, attempting to ensure that St. Andrews develops in a way which will leave a meaningful legacy for generations to come, whilst also remaining mindful of its past.

Through its website and other digital platforms, St. Andrews Preservation Trust maintains contact with both its members and the wider public.
