Objectives

The society is preserving a unique piece of leith maritime heritage. The SS Explorer is an ex Scottish Fishery Research Ship that was registered in Leith and returned to Leith after each research cruise it conducted for the marine lab in Aberdeen.

Our goal is to restore the SS Explorer to a museum ship with working machinery where possible and a visitor center. The SS Explorer would also be used as an educational resource and community space.

Activities

We are currently trying to stabilise the condition of the ship before starting preservation and restoration work.

The society has a technical committee which looks after the technical and safety aspects of the project.

There is also a business development committee which looks after developing the society as an organisation able to complete a project of this size.
