Objectives

‘a space’ arts (ASA) is a visual arts organisation that supports and inspires artists, audiences and communities through an ambitious programme of exhibitions, artist resources, opportunities, and by culturally reanimating lost spaces with arts and heritage.

Activities

Established in 2000, by artists for artists, ‘a space’ arts is a visual arts organisation that leads on a range of artist development projects, including the Arches and Tower House studios, God’s House Tower, the RIPE programme, along with delivering a bespoke range of Artist Resources.

We take an enterprising approach to delivering our mission of supporting visual artists and inspiring audiences and have grown incrementally and strategically, developing a portfolio of projects that have culturally reanimated several Southampton buildings, to become a registered charity and an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation (NPO).

Artist Development is the golden thread that runs through all of our work with all projects in their unique ways providing opportunities for visual artists to develop their careers, along with inspiring audiences with high quality cultural experiences.

Our projects inhabit a range of spaces and locations from Victorian railway arches, vacant shop units, disused pubs, and medieval monuments. We never aspired to have a white box gallery space – rather just ‘a space’ through which we can support artists and audiences. This ethos is present through all of the spaces we inhabit and has been amplified through our cultural reanimation of God’s House Tower as a venue that now offers a wide-ranging programme of opportunities for artists and audiences.
