Objectives

The objects of the Society are: To advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including through the presentation of public concerts and recitals. Two fully staged productions plus concerts are presented in Potters Bar and Enfield.

Activities

Founded in 1964 the company performs an ever changing programme of productions featuring opera, operetta and musical comedy. Our productions are fully staged and costumed, feature a full chorus and are accompanied by an orchestra. We perform two productions a year in Potters Bar, including one light opera and one grand opera, plus additional concerts throughout the year.

It is our policy that auditions for principal roles are open to both company members and non company members. In this way we attract talented outsiders, who are considering a professional career in opera, to work alongside company members who have joined the chorus and moved up to take principal roles. Non-performing opportunities to get involved include assisting backstage or front of house, helping with costumes, props or set building.

Many of our patrons are Friends of Southgate Opera. The Friends receive the following benefits:

  • Advance information on our shows
  • Discount on tickets booked through our ticket secretary
  • Annual Concert at a discounted price
  • Company newsletter, Spotlight, twice a year
  • Recognition of your support in our programme
  • Invitations to company social events
