We are a Cumbria based charity supporting 1,300 Carers in South Lakeland; 220 of these are registered as Young Carers. A Carer is a person of any age who, on an unpaid basis, looks after a relative or friend who cannot manage at home without help.
We enable Carers to manage their caring roles to their own satisfaction by providing a quality service of information, support and advocacy. Our vision is that South Lakeland will be a place where the role and contribution of unpaid Carers is recognised, and they have access to the quality support and services they need to live their own lives to the full while fulfilling their caring responsibilities.
Many Carers experience problems with their physical and emotional wellbeing. They are often socially isolated and their finances suffer as many have to reduce their working hours or give up work. The rural nature of South Lakeland means that many Carers are isolated by an inability to access transport, either because of the needs of the person they care for or through poverty. The combination of these factors means that, without appropriate support, the personal cost of caring can be very high for the Carer.
We are contracted by Cumbria County Council to provide every Carer with a complete assessment of their needs and produce a targeted action plan to meet those needs. Our other services include contingency plans, one to one support, sitting service, counselling, relaxation therapies and support groups. We offer specialist projects and activities for Young Carers and Young Adult Carers, including residentials, trips, training sessions and support groups. Our services are designed to improve the quality of life for Carers and those for whom they care.
