The SOFA Project is Bristol-based Reuse, Recycling & Rehabilitation charity; we started in 1980 and we serve the communities in and around Bristol. SOFA stands for ‘Shifting Old Furniture Around’.
We are a social enterprise company limited by guarantee no.01697726 and a registered charity no.287088 (England and Wales) with three charitable objectives:
We exist to reuse - to save and reuse resources that would have gone to waste. By being agile and creative we offer a new chance to people and things, often achieving all three of our social objectives at the same time.
We believe in creating partnerships with other organisations as a way to serve and respond to changing local needs, meeting our charitable objectives for the benefit of the local community. We have a unique range of networks and partners, we connect these diverse organisations and help them achieve their aims through reuse and retraining.
Our partners include the national Reuse Network, major retailers IKEA, John Lewis and Dixons, Bristol City Council, Bristol Waste, HMP Leyhill, and local non-profit organisations.
We are a social enterprise as well as a charity and aim to be self-funding for our core activities of reuse of goods.
In the past five years leading up to the COVID pandemic we relied upon donations for an average of 13% of our total income, these donations are essential for us to be able to provide training and work experience opportunities. In the past year due to the COVID pandemic our trading income has dropped to approximately 60% of the previous year but the value of donations was similar to the previous year.
While there are multiple organisations offering second hand goods to raise income, our retail is a core activity for the reuse of goods to fulfil our environmental objective, and not just an activity to fundraise for another cause, which gives our retail activity focus and purpose that is different from other high street charity shops
We demonstrate the value of reuse and recycling in all our activities.
