Objectives

We are a registered charity whose purpose is to advance the education of the public on the subject of sociology and related disciplines. Our mission to promote sociological thinking to audiences beyond academia; raise wider awareness for key debates that shape contemporary societies; and to direct and support projects that directly intervene in emerging issues.

Our prime academic publication is The Sociological Review, first published in 1908, which has become one of the world’s foremost general sociology journals, and is dedicated to showcasing the very best and most innovative sociologically informed work.

We do this in a number of ways, including our Magazine; the Uncommon Sense podcast; the Connected Sociologies Curriculum project; our public platform on Solidarity and Care During the Covid-19 Pandemic; and our collaboration with Discover Society.

We support early career researchers, both inside and outside of the university environment. We offer bursaries for unfunded PhD and postdoctoral researchers to attend our events and organise events specifically for ECRs, including our annual writing retreat. Early career researchers are regularly appointed to the Sociological Review editorial board where they receive training on refereeing and other skills under the mentorship of an experienced editor.
