Objectives

The SPAB was founded by William Morris in 1877. Today it is the largest and most technically expert national pressure group fighting to save old buildings from decay, demolition and damage. The SPAB runs training courses; comments on threats to pre-Georgian buildings; operates a free technical helpline; issues advisory publications; and campaigns on issues such as building maintenance and conservative repair. The SPAB's income is derived from interest on its financial investments; legacies and bequests; grants from statutory bodies and others; membership subscriptions; and commercial activities such as running courses and selling publications.

The organisation consists of a Board of Trustees, Director, Team Leaders (x6), Other staff (x20 full and part-time). The SPAB also has a Guardians committee, elected by and from its members, who guide organisational policy decisions by serving on the five committees which support each teams.

Our programme of Working Parties and special events are designed to involve the wider public in the care of their local heritage and inspire young people to consider a career in building conservation.
