Objectives

Smart Communities Ltd (SCL) is a social enterprise and the trading arm of CCS (Community Council for Somerset) a hugely successful, innovative charity providing a range of personalised support and services for people, places and enterprises in Somerset; including the well-recognised Somerset Village Agents.

The rural nature of Somerset means that access to basic services is limited or often non-existent and the cost of living in rural areas is therefore disproportionately high. Hidden deprivation and isolation and an ageing population with lower than average social mobility (West Somerset) contribute to the complexity and higher cost of delivering services in the county.

SCL delivers professional, affordable, flexible consultancy services for a wide range of private, public and third sector clients.

These include Local Authorities, Health and Social Care Commissioners, Parish and Town Councils, Community Building and Village Hall committees, community groups, social and community enterprises and housing developers. Our services help communities and individuals establish their own priorities and take action to improve their quality of life and environment.

Our vision is for: “Vibrant, viable and resilient Somerset communities with healthy, happy people and strong, sustainable enterprises.”

Our mission is: “To inspire and enable Somerset’s people, community organisations and enterprises to take action to build vibrant, viable and resilient communities.”

Activities

SCL has extensive reach and knowledge of the County of Somerset and professional, experienced advisers and involvement officers along with specialist associates to engage with communities to inform and sell our range of consultancy services. These include

  • Housing Need Surveys,
  • Community Plans and Village design Statements,
  • Neighbourhood Plans
  • Feasibility studies for project work and capital builds
  • Community consultation and engagement events
  • Facilitated workshops, focus groups, café conversations and knowledge exchange

At SCL we believe in the potential of community development to empower individuals, groups and communities in bringing about more equality in society. We don’t do things to or for people but instead help them establish their own priorities and focus on their needs.  We enable, facilitate, support, cajole, broker, investigate and use our extensive reach and networks in communities across the county to make things happen.
