Objectives

The Smallpeice Trust delivers interactive activities to encourage 8 – 18-year-olds to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and go onto a career in engineering.

The Trust provides experiences that inspire students to stay on STEM pathways and helps them build essential skills, with a focus on under-represented groups, to:

  1. Increase student and teacher awareness of STEM careers, focused on engineering options
  2. Increase students interest in STEM careers (level 3+), particularly in under-represented groups
  3. Increate student understanding and appreciation of engineering as a career
  4. Build understanding of the entry requirements and skills required for engineering careers
  5. Enhance student life skills in problem solving, communications and teamwork

Without the Trust’s services there will continue to be a lack of young people in the UK choosing STEM educational pathways that make an engineering career possible, the UK’s shortage of engineering skills will continue, and major societal challenges will not be addressed.

Activities

The Smallpeice Trust has three programmes of activities:

  1. STEM Programmes, including:
    1. STEM Challenge Days: Trust led full day or half day hands on activities, delivered face to face or virtually
    2. Think Kits: teacher led STEM club in a box, supporting nine weeks of activity for up to 20 students
    3. Bespoke programmes: using a mix of current products and bespoke elements to meet funder requirements, some programmes are fully bespoke e.g. the teacher led Coding Success.
  2. Courses: Out of school weeklong courses for 12 – 17-year olds that enable students to engage in hands-on challenges working alongside role model engineers in order to help them make informed decision about engineering as a career, and regarding potential pathways.
  3. Arkwright Engineering Scholarships: A 2 year programme for 16-18 years old that have been identified by the Trust’s rigorous selection process as being high potential future leaders in engineering.
