Objectives

SCAD works in the district of Craven, North Yorkshire.  We are a local charity working to ensure people with physical, sensory, leaning and mental health disabilities can all play an active part engaging in community live. Many of our users are frail and elderly or have hidden problems such as heart conditions, learning disabilities or mental ill health. Craven is the largest rural area in North Yorkshire. Many mobility impaired people either can't afford private transport or can't use it. Public transport is very limited and often inaccessible for impossible for many disabled people / people with mobility issues to use. They struggle to actually reach bus stops or are physically unable to safely leave their homes. As a result many of our users are very isolated and lonely and prevented from participating in daily life (attend medical appointments, shop, visit friends etc.). Our role is to prevent this isolation by breaking down they physical barriers that stop users from playing their full part in local life.

Activities

To do this we provide a range of transport and leisure activities and equipment hire.

*We run an extensive community transport operation for people who struggle to travel or leave their home and our four minibuses are all wheelchair accessible.

*We run activities for local people to attend such as swimming clubs, recreational groups and trips on our canal barge

*We hire out aids such as wheelchairs and other disability aids, usually to people who are recently disabled, or have temporary conditions

We also fund our activities through grants but also through significant earned income raised through our four charity shops that operate in local towns
