Objectives

Sholing Valleys Study Centre was set up to preserve the Miller's Pond Local Nature Reserve and to educate the public about this unique environment and the wildlife that can be found there. Spanning around 20 acres, Miller's Pond is Southampton's largest and most diverse Local Nature Reserve.

Since 1988 Sholing Valleys Study Centre has been working as a registered charity to preserve Miller's Pond and its surrounding areas, whilst educating the public about this unique environment and the wildlife found here.

Activities

We hold regular open conservation sessions for the public, which are planned from our management plan. We hold them on both weekend and weekdays. They includes litter picking, tree planting, path building (to enable access) and nature surveys. We also run private corporate work days.
Under our education work we also hold a monthly Nature Watch session for Children. We also programme evening sessions for local youth groups which include bat walks, pond dipping and butterfly surveys. At present we have a Forest School that uses the site.
We are currently in the process of building relationships with local Social Prescribers. We would like to develop our offer to include health and wellbeing projects.
Our Community Centre is available for groups to use.
