Shirley’s Space has ensured the local community can access extensive mental health support. Prior to the commencement of the charity, individuals did not have regular, free-of-charge services in the local area and NHS waiting times were extensive. This was escalated due to the rurality of Aberdeenshire, reducing the possibilities for individuals to access direct mental health support. Consequently, Shirley’s Space has made an overwhelming difference to the local community, who now have the opportunity to discuss issues with a trained volunteer. An overwhelming number of visitors have experienced a successful outcome from our services; this has improved mental health across Aberdeenshire, whilst also minimising the risk of crisis situations developing.
Shirley’s Space offers a listening service to Aberdeenshire residents when they experience mental health difficulties. This typically consists of a drop-in centre and group events, with individuals sharing concerns over a coffee with a trained volunteer. As COVID-19 restricted physical events, the text service was expanded to 72 hours per week during the pandemic; this reflected unprecedented support for the local community during this turbulent period. With the extensive services offered, Shirley’s Space aims to encourage individuals to pursue preventative support. However, the charity accepts this is not always possible and endeavours to minimise the suicide rate in Aberdeenshire; as of July 2021, Shirley’s Space has prevented the escalation of seventeen crisis situations. Furthermore, we refer a small number of individuals to receive CBT support, which is provided externally and funded by the charity. This enables individuals with deep-rooted mental health issues to identify the root cause and implement preventative measures. The services are available to any adult based in Aberdeenshire, although any crisis situation across the country will receive a response.
