Objectives

The Community Trust manage two buildings. We saved the historic Old Girls School (built in 1876) from probable demolition and in September 2018 it opened as a Community Centre providing a variety of facilities for our growing population. We also manage the library which was likely to close unless it became a community library, staffed and run by volunteers. In April 2017 we opened our doors as Sherburn & Villages Community Library with a team of 70 volunteers and have had a busy and successful initial period.

Activities

The Community Trust were successful in receiving a Reaching Communities award from the Big Lottery Fund and this has been central in enabling us to refurbish the Old Girls School. We now employ a Centre Manager and assisted by a Management Group she helps to provide a wide range of community activities. The Community Library provides books and IT services (including a home library service) and also helps with access to local services such as Age UK and Sherburn Visiting Scheme. The library is in Sherburn in Elmet, but also serves the surrounding villages and we are developing a community hub to provide our residents with a wide range of information.
