Objectives

Shade the UK are a non-profit who raise awareness of issues related to climate change and the vulnerable. Currently in the UK, around 1 in 5 homes overheat and 2000 excess deaths per year due to hot weather, which is only expected to get worsen due to global warming. Therefore, our focus surrounds the impact of overheating and prolonged hot weather within care homes, schools, social housing, and homeless shelters, where people are most vulnerable to the effects of increased temperatures. We aim to influence change in the built environment and public spaces in order to safeguard the health and well-being of vulnerable individuals and communities.

Activities

Shade the UK is currently in early stages of developing. At the moment, our focus is on raising awareness of issues relating to climate change and the vulnerable. We aim to be a free resource for those seeking advice on how to mitigate against the future impacts of climate change. We wish to build a network and alliance between the public and designers to help shape our country to meet the demands of climate change.

Our ultimate aim is to envision a new future for London that is fully adapted to a warmer climate. We will encourage the government and industry to invest more into retrofit projects that provide external shade and other passive cooling strategies to existing buildings and public spaces.
