At Selby College, we help our students to have, and to achieve, the highest aspirations possible, whatever their study route. The high-quality of our provision and the achievements of our learners are testament to this.

Selby College strengths
History of Selby College
Selby College is situated in a leafy semi-rural market town located at the southern tip of North Yorkshire and currently employs approximately 250 permanent and temporary teaching and support staff. Since the College first opened its doors in 1984, it has gone from strength to strength, continuing to support the education and training needs of the town and the surrounding district, as well as into East Yorkshire and the Humber.
There are approximately 1,200 full-time 16-18 year-olds, 240 Higher Education students, 540 Apprentices and 1,260 Adult Learners on study programmes with Selby College.
The College’s £35 million campus was completed in 2010 after a comprehensive building programme. A £1.4m extension and refurbishment to the college’s Aspiration Building was formally opened in June 2017.
Selby College Corporation is responsible for the strategic direction and educational character of Selby College. The Strategic Plan, which includes a clear vision, mission and objectives is regularly reviewed to ensure it meets the evolving needs of students and the community it serves.
A Levels
The College has focused significantly on driving up our progress measures and challenging students to aspire higher. We focus on A Levels in facilitating subjects to ensure the majority of our A Level students will apply to Russell Group universities. In terms of high grades, over 22% of our A Level results were A* or A, and over 51% were A* - B.
Our A Level curriculum is mostly delivered in our Sixth Form Academy, which has dedicated classrooms and spaces for learners. It’s next door neighbour, the Jubilee Building, houses specialised Science laboratories, Sports facilities and further social spaces.
Vocational
Our Level 3 Vocational qualifications also delivered an excellent score of 3 in terms of Alps data.
If students choose to take one of these applied or technical Level 3 qualifications, they will be stimulated and challenged on this combined academic and practical route. This allows students to choose a range of high-quality destinations, from progression to Russell Group universities, to Apprenticeships or Higher Apprenticeships with Higher Education and work combined.
To ensure a well-rounded education we also have a range of College sports, including Football and Rugby, in partnership with Hull FC.
All students undertake work experience and/or UCAS conventions as well as employability and independent study and management time. This ensures that not only are they high-achieving, but that they have developed the skills and understanding for the next step in their career pathway.
Apprenticeship provision
A route that is becoming increasingly popular with both young people and adult career changers is Apprenticeships. Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to work for a real employer, earn a real salary and gain a real qualification whilst gaining valuable workplace skills and experience. Many Apprenticeship programmes are fully delivered within the workplace (which includes 20% off-the job training); other programmes require a day’s study at Selby College.
The Apprenticeship and Technical arms of the College offer a wide and growing range of Apprenticeships and qualifications that place students well to take up good jobs and careers in sectors including Engineering, Health & Social Care, Hair & Beauty, Construction and Information Technology.
Following the publication of the Government’s latest National Achievement Rate Tables, Selby College was delighted to come in the top 10% of Further Education Colleges nationally for its Apprenticeship provision. The Achievement rate tables are the official measure of student success and demonstrate the percentage of students that were awarded a qualification on completing an academic year.
Links with Businesses
We work only with employers who are highly committed to the quality of their Apprenticeships or student placements, and to the future careers of those who start as Apprentices or undertake work experience with them.
Higher Education
While the majority of our A Level students progress to university, Selby College has also grown its Higher Education provision. As awards of the University of Hull, the University of Huddersfield or Pearson, our programmes can take your learning to the next level and help you gain qualifications highly valued by employers. Selby College offers a range of Higher National Certificates and Diplomas, Foundation degrees and full degrees in the following subject areas: Art & Design, Business, Computing, Early Childhood Studies, Engineering, Events Management, Hair & Beauty Management, In-service Certificate in Education/PGCE (for Lifelong Learning), Leadership & Management, Learning Support and Sports.
Our Higher Education options provide a key local service to learners who are not able or who do not want to study away from home at university. Each year we hold a full graduation ceremony at Selby Abbey. The College has been awarded the Teaching Excellence Framework Silver Award for its Higher Education provision.
Department of Education Destination Measures
The College is very proud of the fact that we perform very highly in the DfE sustained destinations measure. This measure looks at young people six months after they completed College to see if they have remained in their positive destination. For the last three years we have been in the top 5% of the Colleges in England.
We offer all our students excellent careers advice, coaching and support with UCAS.
