Who we are
We empower, develop and train young people and help them to create successful futures - at no cost to them. Many cope with adverse circumstances such as family breakdown, family members in prison, anger issues, mental health problems or drug problems. Our beneficiaries also self-identified three key underlying issues:
Low aspirations,Low self esteemLow skill levels.
Our work addresses these and other issues, providing training, work placements and supporting individuals in fulfilling their hidden potential.
The young people we support are amongst the most deprived in the country, scoring in the worst 10% on the index of multiple deprivation. Our core beneficiaries are aged 16-25, 80% BAME and 60% female.
Over 2,500 young creatives work with us every year, guided by our staff and volunteers to improve their lives and their economic potential. Outside of lockdown, we have 120 volunteers a week
We find that, with the right support, guidance and opportunities our beneficiaries consistently excel and we have many alumni who are now industry leaders with high profile, award winning careers.
Three of our artists have been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.
Five were in the BBC’s top 10 ‘Sound of...’ lists in 2020.
Currently, six of BBC1xtra are our graduates.
One ex-trainee headlined Glastonbury.
Our ServicesWe have an award-winning programme, providing industry specific training and work experience and have established solid relationships and open door career pathways to world leading companies (in December 2020 we found three of our volunteers full-time jobs in leading presenter roles with Apple Music (Beats 1), BBC 1Xtra and Kiss FM).
From 2016/17 our young stakeholders expanded our remit and introduced a mental health schools programmewhere our beneficiaries deliver impactful peer-to-peer mental health awareness and practical advice to youngpeople who might be struggling. We have now expanded on that service and adapted it to an interactive, post-lockdown, mentalhealth TV show. We have been broadcasting to over 3000 students a week with impactful mental heath awareness, practical skills on managing it yourself and interventions for when you need help.
