Objectives

Since 2002 we have been helping a large girls’ nursery/primary school in rural eastern Uganda. 500+ day girls and 200+ hostel girls and orphans.

The school accepts girls of all faiths and tribes.

We fund -

  • School Lunch
  • School Medical Centre + Nurses
  • Library + Librarian
  • Literacy Support
  • Repairs and Maintenance and some building work

in 2009 we started building a Secondary School deep in the village - now with government paid teachers.  Current enrolment is  600+ students and the need is to build to accommodate 2,000 students

We help with the support of a number of poor girls

We are now beginning to help other local primary schools enabling them to provide school lunches.  Also helping with construction/repair of dilapidated toilet blocks and classrooms. etc.

Before our help -

  • Too many of the pupils were unable to concentrate in class because of severe hunger
  • Some pupils died from Malaria
  • There was no culture of reading and spelling was poor
  • Toilet and washing facilities were very basic
  • There was no Secondary School in the village
  • Many children dropped out of education

Activities

We rely on word of mouth, personal contacts and talks to raise money. We presently do not have a volunteer who focuses on fundraising.  Many of our volunteers who go to the school come back and fundraise - eg: Marathon des Sables - Marathons - Swims - Canoe Races etc.

Back in the UK we have had some success with Grant Applications - eg: Playground Equipment - Washroom Block - Assembly Building - Scholarship Support.
