Objectives

YMCA Reading is one of the oldest YMCA's in the world.  Our mission is to work with the wider community to empower young people to realise their full potential for the benefit of all.

YMCA Reading place young people at the heart of our services but seek to bring the wider community together by offering a range of services including but not limited to:

  • YMCA Reading provide 40 units of safe, supported accommodation for young people in Reading every night.
  • YMCA Reading also provide excellent access to early years learning at our Parkside Preschool.
  • The YMCA Parkside Café provides an opportunity for the wider community to integrate into the YMCA.  It is usually full to capacity, with mothers and toddlers particularly enjoying the soft play area.
  • YMCA Reading have a workshop for training apprentices and which also provides alternative learning opportunities to a number of Reading colleges for kids that are disengaged with education.
  • YMCA Reading built and manage the Padworth Outdoor Activity Centre, primarily for the use of local scout groups, but available for other organisations as well.

Young people are at the centre of everything we do at YMCA and we work hard 365-days-a-year to ensure our services are of the highest quality to help them contribute and thrive in their local communities.

Activities

  • Provision of high quality supported accommodation for 40 previously homeless young people (age 16-25)
  • Included in this is a secure family unit to house single mothers and their babies
  • Parkside Pre-school provides Early Years education for up to 40 2-4 year olds, has just received a 'Good' rating in its first Ofsted inspection.
  • Parkside Community Cafe, our very popular cafe with soft play area for toddlers.  The Cafe provides a meeting space for the whole of the local community.
  • Milward Sports Centre- opened in 1963, located behind our modern accommodation block, has a multi-use gym and sports studio.  Used by a wide variety of community groups from sport groups, Scouts, NCT groups, YMCA residents, social groups and more.
  • Workshop - We have a fully kitted out wood working shop where we provide alternative education programmes to local colleges.  Through our workshop we have been able to identify students with good potential as apprentices some of whom have progressed to become excellent members of staff.
  • Padworth Outdoor Activity Centre - based in rural West Berkshire, and largely used by Scout groups, the Padworth Centre provides an excellent facility for groups to explore and learn about the countryside and outdoor activities.
