Objectives

Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch is a vibrant producing theatre, working in Outer East London, Essex and beyond. As a cultural hub, over 210,000 people enjoy the programme each year, including the best in home grown theatre, visiting live entertainment and inspiring Learning and Participation projects. Behind the scenes, sets and costumes are lovingly created on-site by a highly skilled team. Audiences are guaranteed a warm welcome from a three year winner of UK Theatre’s Most Welcoming Theatre (2016 – 2018) and London Theatre of the Year 2020 (The Stage Awards), the first Outer London theatre to receive this prestigious award.

Activities

QTH is at the heart of the local community, and offers a wide range of life enhancing workshops and classes for people of all ages – working with more than 34,000 participants last year and recently celebrating 25 years of Youth Theatre. QTH was Theatre partner to the National Theatre for Public Acts, a new landmark initiative to create extraordinary acts of theatre and community, producing the European premiere of the musical adaptation of As You Like It, which saw 149 participants from across London’s diverse communities experiencing a life changing performance on QTH’s stage. For two years, QTH has toured the National Theatre’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time to schools across Havering and Essex and in 2019 partnered with Central School of Speech and Drama to revive DNA, attracting 39 schools from across the country QTH talent development programme, Outer Limits, connects with local and regional professional artists, offering essential support that hasn’t previously existed and is now being extended to Southend, Thurrock and Basildon. Essex on Stage is an ambitious new programme led by QTH, championing positive notions of Essex, celebrating theatre made by working class people and raising aspirations for emerging artists from Essex and Outer East London, made possible by the Theatre receiving the 2018 Clothworkers’ Foundation Theatre Award. This was launched with the regional premiere of David Eldridge’s In Basildon and an ambitious rep season, offering the world premiere of Sadie Hasler’s Stiletto Beach and London premiere of Luke Norris’ So Here We Are.
