Quad-Rebuild registered charity in 2021 after founder Joseph English had an accident in October 2017. He came up with the idea after seeing people stuck in rehabilitation, waiting for adaptations and care.
Joseph was inspired to set up the charity to help individuals with spinal cord injuries.
Our motto is rebuilding lives, rebuilding homes, rebuilding your image and to rebuild your future.
Rebuilding lives is part of a scheme to attend hospitals and mentor patients.
Assisting them with anything required and providing them with the information of what to expect. We are in the process of completing a new book, in this book we aim to provide an experience of my life from entering intensive care right the way through to being discharged from hospital. This is to provide patients that are in spinal injury rehab centres with clear information on what to expect and the steps that I went through, (Joseph English) so that they have an idea on what they could potentially go through.
An example of this is when the Trustees and I will spend a full day every fortnight at a spinal injury rehab centre, offering our support & mentorship through their time in the clinic, listening to their worries/fears and giving them hope that will encourage them to live their life to the fullest. Further support would then be offered to individuals that are struggling the most, offering psychological support which would be paid for through the charity.
The individuals that would qualify for further support would be assessed by the trustees which would highlight individuals' difficulties, and there most acute needs. A score system would be created for everyone and people that would complete a higher score on the questions would then be assessed as to the level of support required.
Rebuilding Homes coming from a family background in construction helped me to realise the potential of how I could help people by doing house renovations.
House adaptions would be granted for the most urgent and acute needs. Assessing an individual's level of spinal cord injury, whether or not they own their own home, the current accessibility and the length of time they have been in hospital all collate together to form a score of who if the most vulnerable.
The house adaptions would be provided through the charity, further consideration would have to made, as to how much finance the charity comprised to evaluate which application could be accepted, due to having a previous background in construction, Joseph English provides a wealth of contacts which could carry out the specialist adaptations that would be required. This is not a means tested benefit, the support that Quad-rebuild offers is applicable to all patients regardless of their financial background.
Rebuilding our image is based around self-acceptance, self-image and self-confidence.
Due to having contacts in the Leeds College of Hairdressing, support could be offered to each individual in washing, cutting and styling hair for females and males as well as grooming for males. Helping them to look at their new image in a mirror, accepting their spinal cord injury and been at peace with themselves. The hardest thing to do in rehabilitation is to accept the injury that has been caused and having the ability to feel good about yourself. This part ties in with the mentorship programme that we offer which also takes into consideration an individual's vulnerability and mental state of mind, again to assess each person for the score card basis, to highlight who would benefit the most from our support.
To rebuild your future the final step is to help individuals to integrate back into the community. Instilling the confidence to live their life and support their development into society.
The last moto to ‘rebuild your future’ is a culmination of the other moto's, supporting people out into the community, helping them to accept the way their life has been changed and supporting them out into public scenarios such as; shopping, eating out, socialising with others effected with a spinal cord injury and mainly to help them gain confidence through each setting.
It is important to Joseph English and the trustees to remind them that they are still a normal person just with an acquired spinal cord injury, the support that the charity will offer to people has major benefits towards their mental health and state of mind, so that we not only help them transition into society but change their mindset into a positive one. Working alongside other charities that can support their psychological needs such as, Andy’s Man Club, Samaritans and Mind. Additionally, offering support through physio therapy, assistive technology, occupational therapy, and dietitian requirements. All of these combine together to offer a comprehensive form of support out into the community.
The vision for Quad-Rebuild aims to connect the emotional well-being of vulnerable patients suffering with a spinal cord injury with individuals that inspire and transform the emotional wellbeing of people being affected by spinal cord injuries.
The purpose is to help people that have acquired a spinal cord injury, adjusting them to their new life settings and encouraging them to better their lives whilst also mentoring for their wellbeing, adapting homes to get them out of hospital, rebuilding their imagine and self-confidence around having a spinal cord injury and building their confidence to get back out into society.
Charity values; Rebuild Lives, Rebuild Homes, Rebuild Image, Rebuild Future.
