Objectives

Our organisation is targeted to help young people from disadvantaged backgrounds who are in need of support, mentoring and guidance. We work to help these young people in accessing work, developing independent living skills and progressing on to further education. We also provide counseling services to enable these young people, some of whom have experienced loss, bereavement, physical and/or sexual abuse and neglect, to overcome emotional distress. We also support those in the care system with a particular focus towards those in the leaving care teams.

Activities

We provide one to one mentoring for looked after children and disadvantaged youths.

Firstly we will seek a number of volunteer mentors who will be given training in child protection, communication, stress management skills etc.

They will then be paired with men-tees from disadvantaged backgrounds and looked after children.

Mentors will meet their mentees once or twice a week for sit down sessions which will allow men-tees to raise any concerns, issues or problems they may have in order for the mentors to give them advice, coaching and encouragement.

There will also be occasions where men-tees take part in other activities such as sport, leisure and arts. This project helps to focus children and young people and give them guidance and encouragement therefore making them participate more effectively in their local communities. This project aims to provide young people with voluntary jobs therefore preparing them for the work environment.

Primarily our mentees will come from childrens care homes and young people in foster homes progressing into adulthood.

This project aims to work in partnership with existing fostering agencies to help them recruit and train mentors which may continue to work with them once this project has expired.
