We support girls and women in poor and rural areas of Kenya by providing reusable period pads and start up funding for community pad making projects and businesses.
Girls can miss school when they have their period because of the lack of period products and this means they are disadvantaged educationally, become disempowered and the cycle of poverty continues. We also know that some girls will have sex with men to get money to buy pads and this places them in danger of early pregnancy, sexual abuse and child marriage. By providing reusable pads, our experience shows that school absenteeism is reduced, teenage pregnancy is reduced and educational attainment is increased.
Women struggle to feed their children and by offering them an opportunity to learn a new skill and potentially start their own business they can make an income, provide for their families and help their communities.
Our UK based Trustees run the charity and with our partner organisations, we are able to make an impact on girls’ and womens’ health, gender inequality and also support local communities.
Power Of Pads raises funds in the UK from donors and fundraising activities. We then identify partner organisations in Kenya that can develop and manage a pad project in their community. We financially support them to set up and deliver the pad making activities and distribute free pads to the most needy girls.
