Pop Up Projects (est 2011) is a non-profit social enterprise with a mission to transform lives through
literature and publishing. Through our work we aim to:
1. Provide literary experiences and publishing opportunities for writers and illustrators of all
ages, including children and young people;
2. Engage and inspire, nurture and invest in writers and illustrators from under-represented
and excluded backgrounds;
3. Contribute to a more inclusive canon of children’s books, so that more young readers can
find themselves and discover others in the books they read.
We are currently in the process of relaunching our brand, vision and programme of work in April
2022. Over the coming years our work will be organised into two strands: illustration and writing
courses in diverse settings, including schools and communities; and publishing, with a twin
emphasis on new and emerging artists, and addressing under-representation in children’s
publishing. Current projects which sit within these strands include:
Pathways is a two-year talent development programme
increasing minority representation (people of colour, disabled
people) in children’s publishing, with investment from major
publisher and university affiliates. A new Pathways Plus
programme of one-off courses is currently
being piloted.
The Rainbow Library is a UK and Ireland-wide literature creation and publishing
programme, involving LGBTQ+ young people collaborating with LGBTQ+ writers
and illustrators in eight cities. The resulting eight-book collection, including
picture books, poetry, comics, fiction and nonfiction, will be published in 2023 -
dramatically increasing LGBTQ+ inclusion in children’s books.
10 Stories is our first commercial publishing
venture, a collection of 10 new books giving a platform to
untold stories and diverse new voices, launched June 2021.
With plans to launch a new collection annually from 2022.
Pop Up Festival for SEND is a schools’ literature programme which connects
thousands of children with special educational needs and disabilities with quality
children’s books and authors.
