Objectives

Polka is one of just a handful of dedicated children’s venues in the UK. Presenting a year-round programme of new work made at Polka, visiting shows, and Creative Learning activities for 0–12-year-olds, we continue to pioneer developments in children’s theatre, nurture artistic talent in the sector, and maintain an international reputation while serving local communities. We involve children at every stage of the creative process and lead the way in Early Years theatre for under 6s supported by our academic collaborators and the EU-funded partners. Creative Learning is central to our mission - our shows are supported by tailored community and schools initiatives that benefit 18,000+ largely disadvantaged and disabled children each year.

Activities

Polka produces and receives a wide variety of shows each year, delivering a carefully considered program for 0-12 year olds, alongside an extensive Creative Learning Take Part program. The Take Part program features termly, holiday and drop in workshops led by experienced practitioners. There is also community outreach to engage Merton and surrounding areas, and also enable those who otherwise wouldn't be able to attend, to experience shows or workshops. The work put on at Polka also focuses on schools and encouraging schools to brings their students to experience live theatre. In response to the schools' hardships post pandemic and now the cost of living crisis, Polka have committed to giving away 6,000 tickets to school children who otherwise wouldn't be able to attend theatre - in support of the ethos that theatre helps children to navigate their world through inspirational creative experiences.
