Our Hut became a charity in 2011 and aims to equip future generations to get involved in and take responsibility for shaping positive sustainable environments. It was founded in 2004 by Lucy Lavers, Judy Ovens and Suzanna Prizeman, who bring together a range of skills and experience ideal for architecture education. We inspire and educate through programmes of interactive workshops about architecture and the built environment. This work opens young people’s eyes to the world around them, develops their sense of aspiration and links to all areas of the curriculum. Most of our work is carried out in schools, both primary and secondary in key stages 1,2 and 3, we also hold workshops for families and teacher inset.
Previous work includes; Sublime Structures at Crystal Palace Park, the Peckham Townscape Heritage Initiative education project, the Brixton Townscape Heritage Initiative education project, two Our Hut generated projects funded by HLF, All Aboard for Stockwell and A Space for Flowers, commissions by a number of different bodies including Lambeth Council, the RIBA, the British Museum education department and A New Direction (Creative Partnerships) to design and deliver architectural education projects; devising, testing and writing an educational resource book for primary schools, Our Street: Learning to See for CABE; developing and delivering our own projects. The school programmes of creative and informative workshops are designed to help children engage with their local heritage and environment and increasingly we are able to create an online schools resource available for other schools to use as part of the legacy. Workshops outside of schools include family days and bus tours for adults and children and oral history projects on specific buildings (Stockwell Bus Garage and New Covent Garden Flower Market, Crystal Palace Park). We work extensively with volunteers on projects including classroom volunteers, oral history volunteers and sound engineers. We produce teaching resources so schools can adapt and embed the projects into their curriculum and we also deliver CPD sessions for teachers.
