Objectives

The Otherwise Club  is a community centre for families choosing to learn together without school. It provides opportunities to meet regularly, exchange views, offer mutual support, as well as organise activities and trips for families with at least one child of school age out of school.

Activities

With many families now involved, The Otherwise Club has evolved into a community centre for home educating families, with the aims of:

  • providing regular social space for families to exchange views, ideas and support each other
  • providing workshops and group activities chosen by members and in which all members are able to participate
  • providing meeting space for social activities and workshops, educational activities,  trips and visits abroad.

As well as the support gained from meeting other home educating families, the club provides regular workshops and group activities, GCSE classes and various educational day outings such as to The Anglo-Saxon Village at Stow..

We organise trips away including an annual weeklong trip to a farm in Glastonbury. We run a Duke of Edinburgh Award group for the over 14s organising several expeditions as part of this. We have taken groups to visit Pompeii (Naples) and exchanged with Spanish and German schools, we are part of an EU initiative spending 10 days in Germany with young people from 7 other EU nations and have taken 3 young people for a 4 week trip to Cuba. All of these educational adventures are paid for through fundraising or donations.
