Orpington and Bromley Gateway Club has been providing social activities and entertainment to adults with learning disabilities for over fifty years. Every Friday before lockdown about 60 members, their helpers and unrelated volunteers would gather in St George’s Church Hall in Bickley for a couple of hours of activities, musical entertainment, chat and (probably most important for some) tuck. During lockdown we’ve provided a reduced programme online. Subject to government decisions, the Committee hopes to re-open the offline Club on 23rd July.
Before lockdown, the Club had started a process of inter-generational transfer as existing trustees, who had been involved for many years, started looking to reduce their involvement. Some new Trustees were appointed but more are needed as the Club goes through a period of significant change, especially since the previous club leader left during lockdown. The caretaker leader who has run the online sessions can’t take on the permanent role and so we are looking for someone to head up the Club’s post-Covid re-establishment over the coming months. We believe that this is a great opportunity for someone with vision to contribute to steering the Club’s re-birth.
The Club provides a varied programme of leisure and recreational activities such as discos, indoor sports, games, quizzes and occasional outings. We offer local adults with a learning disability, a fun Friday night out - just like other people in the community might choose to enjoy at the end of the week.
