Objectives

We believe that community orchards can transform lives and help nature to thrive, so we create and champion community orchards across the country.

Our vision is that in every city, town and village across the country, every home is within easy-reach of productive, well-cared-for, community-run orchards. These orchards are making a significant contribution to the country’s fruit and nut provision, improving health and wellbeing, building community resilience, nurturing skills and providing cherished, nature-rich, community spaces used by a wide range of people.

We are a national charity that inspires and trains communities to create, restore and maintain community orchards for the benefit of people, communities and the environment. Our Project Managers and consultants work with communities in hubs across England, Wales and Scotland, and we have a core staff team, based mostly in London.

We have been around since 2009 and have grown from a London-based project to become the country’s national community orchard charity. We have created and restored over 600 community orchards in our time. We provide ongoing support for these community groups as well as running accredited training programmes in orchard management and forest gardening. Our project work is varied and we work in a range of settings including prisons, schools and in the diverse communities that we serve

Activities

Our key aims are to:

  • Take action on climate and food through orchards – planting new orchards and enhancing orchard biodiversity
  • Improve access to orchards across wider social groups – engaging marginalised groups and connecting people to orchards for wellbeing
  • Enable sustainable communities – giving people the skills to manage their own orchards and grow local food
  • Champion orchards – making the case for orchards through policy & advocacy work and awareness-raising campaigns.

The charity’s key activities include: planting, restoring and improving urban community orchards; undertaking practical conservation work that promotes orchard biodiversity; delivering orchard skills training including accredited courses; and running community-based events and activities.
