Objectives

North East Law Centre provides both free and affordable legal advice to people across the North East. We fight for justice on behalf of those who need it, without prejudice.

Our Vision is to empower our service users to become people who know their legal rights and can exercise them, are confident, have allies and have a route to a better life through our intervention.

Our Mission is to:

  • Educate people about the law at scale, so that people are not scared, confused or stressed by it, but understand what rights they have.
  • Help people get justice who would not otherwise be able to through high-quality advice, advocacy and representation.
  • Create new routes to secure justice that are accessible, local, and values-driven.

Activities

Our free legal services are made possible through funding grants from charitable trusts, foundations and local authorities (Newcastle City Council and Sunderland City Council) and are for those who are not eligible for Legal Aid and can’t afford any form of paid for legal representation.

Many people require legal support and advice but don’t qualify for our free services. By the same token, they cannot afford to pay a private law firm to represent them either, which is why we offer paid for services too, at a cost-effective rate.

We develop services that are targeted at groups within the community who have the greatest need including:

  • the unemployed and low paid
  • people with disabilities
  • BAME communities (black, Asian and Minority Ethnic)
  • women and children

North East Law Centre is different from other law organisations because we provide legal representation and individual casework aimed at the early and timely resolution of problems which may otherwise escalate to more resource intensive parts of the justice system.

As we are completely independent, our only priority is our clients and providing the service they need to overcome the often-complex situations they find themselves in.
