Objectives

New Horizons is a forward looking organisation that engages in critical discussions around Muslim identity, tradition and reform to provide a positive vision of what it means to be Muslim today.

New Horizons wants to challenge narrow and closed attitudes and counter prejudice wherever it is found. Our vision is of a society where relations between Muslims and their fellow citizens are strong and healthy and where Islam feels at home, rooted in its British context.

We want people to understand and appreciate better the value of open, democratic and diverse societies; the value of free speech, individual liberty and human rights; the importance of our common humanity. And we want to argue that from within the Islamic tradition in a way that resonates with religiously conscious Muslims.

New Horizons is about living our faith in a British Way.

We know what Islam looks like in India, China, Africa...what should it look like in Britain, Europe and the West?

Activities

New Horizons in British Islam organises numerous campaigns and events throughout the year. Last year, these have included:

- British Islam Conference 2019: a weekend promoting collaboration and thinking around the idea of a British Islam and encouraging the development of British Muslim thought, identity and culture; as well as creating a space for the development of networks and partnerships.

- #MeToo and Muslim women: In April 2019 we held an 'unconference' to collectively explore how the #MeToo movement impacts Muslim women across the Atlantic - How can an intersectional lens establish the unique and specific challenges that Muslim women face...

- Ramadan Bites video series: Ramadan is a special time for all Muslims where we abandon some of our normal routines and habits and take a step back to think, fast and reflect. We at New Horizons also ask our friends and colleagues from across the different faith groups, as well as those without a religion, to take a moment to reflect. It could be to reflect on the past year, a particular spiritual theme or a social issue. We call these daily collection of thoughts, 'Ramadan Bites'...

- Hear it, Challenge it campaign: At New Horizons we do not believe in a communitarian approach to resolving prejudice (that we should only be concerned about ‘our own’). We are concerned with all forms of prejudice. It is why we think it is only right, and indeed powerful, for a group rooted in Muslim practice and values to reach out to society to talk about the dangers of antisemitism.
