Objectives

New Forest Mencap is a small but impactful local charity dedicated to supporting individuals with learning disabilities, their families, and the wider community across the New Forest area. Our mission is to promote social inclusion, provide essential services, and empower people with learning disabilities to lead fulfilling lives.

We work to develop practical solutions and enhance public understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with learning disabilities. By advocating for better services and influencing policies, we aim to create a more inclusive society where people with learning disabilities have equal opportunities.

Each year, we directly support around 100 individuals through our programs, clubs, and support services, offering them opportunities for personal growth, social engagement, and greater independence.

Activities

New Forest Mencap offers a range of services designed to support individuals with learning disabilities and their families, ensuring they have access to social opportunities, skill development programs, and essential advice.

Our Key Services Include:

  • Gateway Clubs – We run three Gateway Social Clubs in New Milton and Brockenhurst, providing a safe and welcoming space for members to build friendships, take part in activities, and improve their social confidence. These clubs also offer much-needed respite for parents and carers.
  • Support for Parents & Carers – We facilitate meetings and support networks to provide guidance, share experiences, and connect families with essential resources.
  • Lifeskills Development – Our structured Lifeskills courses run for four months and focus on building independence, practical abilities, and confidence for adults with learning disabilities.
  • Gateway Awards Scheme – A program designed to boost confidence and skills through a range of activities, helping individuals achieve their personal goals.
  • Work & Volunteering Experience – Our long-established charity shop in New Milton offers short work experience placements, allowing individuals to develop key skills in a real working environment.
  • Food Larder & Advice Services – In partnership with the Citizens Advice Bureau and the New Forest Basics Bank, we host a weekly Food Larder at our Nedderman Centre, providing food support alongside expert advice on benefits, employment, and more.
  • Advocacy & Awareness – We actively engage with local authorities, professionals, and policymakers to advocate for better services and support for people with learning disabilities.

Through these activities, New Forest Mencap plays a vital role in improving the quality of life for people with learning disabilities and ensuring they are valued members of their community.
