Objectives

New Charlton Community Centre is a small but vibrant community anchor organisation. Our vision is to reduce social isolation and promote the independence and resilience of vulnerable populations in the New Charlton and Woolwich Riverside areas. We have three key objectives, these are:

  1. Reduce social isolation
  2. Promote the independence and resilience of vulnerable populations
  3. Meet the immediate and long-term needs of residents suffering from the impact of the Covid-19 crisis.

Activities

  • Range of activities that are free or low cost at the point of access to all residents, with a focus on those most at risk of social isolation due to a range of factors, e.g. age, financial status, cultural barriers etc. - current activities and clubs includes: Scouts, New Charlton Childminders Association, dance groups, tea dance sessions, and various local faith groups
  • Hosting community events in the hall space: most recently the 2021 Christmas panto!
  • In relation to local vulnerable residents impacted by Covid-19: acting as a hub for food donations, preparation and distribution to vulnerable residents; conducting regular phone check-ins with centre-users identified as within the most vulnerable category; signposting between residents and other support service.
  • During 2022 our ambition is to also focus on outreach to other vulnerable residents and groups - designing and providing services and activities in response to local need. For example: people with a learning disability or physical disability; people dealing with short or long-term mental health conditions; newly arrived migrant and refugee and asylum seeker communities; individuals in insecure housing or experiencing homelessness.
