Our mission is to create inspirational change by providing free career advice to help prepare young people from the most disadvantaged backgrounds for their future, and thereby breakdown barriers to social mobility. Our bespoke services are delivered by our amazing team of volunteer career advisers whose experience and expertise allows MyBigCareer to offer advice and guidance free of charge. These individuals are motivated by their shared passion for making career and educational opportunities available to all – regardless of background, affluence or connections.
Students from lower socioeconomic groups who have uncertain career support have an increased likelihood of becoming NEET, a young person who is not in education, employment or training (Department for Education, 2015). The COVID-19 crisis has had a disproportionately negative impact on the employment outcomes of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. An additional 650,000 18-24 years olds could find themselves unemployed this year (Sutton Trust, 2020). Our mission to support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve their long-term aspirations has never been more crucial and urgent.
The uniqueness of the work is one-to-one face-to-face guidance, and this is supported by a range of other services, including exposure to the working world through Insight and Access Days.
Our programme supports students at a number of key milestones during their secondary school journey to empower them to make positive decisions affecting their education and future aspirations. Our interventions include;
Career workshops (Yrs 7-8)
1:1 Career Coaching (Yrs 9-10)
Career Insight Days, Job Application Support and University Applications (Yrs 11-13)
