Objectives

We offer participatory music sessions and projects for older, isolated, and vulnerable individuals in care and community settings throughout York. Our work includes a variety of intergenerational events that connect these individuals with local schoolchildren and students. We also provide free transportation for those who need it, and our efforts are supported by a dedicated team of volunteers.

Activities

  • Two weekly music groups in sheltered housing schemes – both advertised to and well-attended by people living in the wider community, as well as tenants living in the schemes
  • Three music groups in residential care homes
  • Three singing groups in partnership with York Medical Group (YMG), as part of their social prescribing programme
  • Two community choirs, one of which will be based at Wilberforce House, an extra care housing scheme for people living with a visual impairment and other disabilities
  • Up to 50 intergenerational and other community-linked sessions aimed at dismantling social and age-related stereotypes eg: workshops, projects and concerts with other local groups, school pupils and students, either in school or other community venues
  • A summer ‘Sing & Socialise’ project, bringing together members of different Musical Connections groups at a single venue in August, to help them get to know each other and work towards a joint performance.
  • Provision of free transport to anyone who needs it to attend weekly sessions and additional events in the wider community – 82 people, who would not otherwise have been able to get involved in community activities, have used this service over the last year, mostly on a repeat basis
  • Digital inclusion and online activities, including creation of song videos
  • Volunteer support, both during and between sessions, so as to provide any extra help needed to enable people to get/remain involved.
