Objectives

Set down a leafy lane in Newnham, Cambridge, Millington Road Nursery School attracts children aged 2-5 years from all over the world. Our highly qualified and experienced practitioners and administrative staff work in partnership with Parents and Carers. The Nursery School, a five-minute bike ride from Cambridge city centre, provides a cosmopolitan and exciting cultural environment for children, and promotes learning with equal opportunities for all.

Established over 50 years ago, Millington Road Nursery School is committed to being as eco-friendly as possible. The children are taught the importance of caring for the environment for future generations – they enjoy recycling, composting, saving energy, and attracting and protecting the local wildlife.

The Nursery has always received children from many different nationalities whose parents are currently working or studying in Cambridge.  It makes every effort to communicate with these children in their own language and to acknowledge various festivals from around the world as part of the curriculum.

The Nursery is a partner in the government's Early Years Foundation Stage Programme and parents of children in their pre-school year can obtain a grant to cover all of the cost of up to fifteen hours a week. This also includes funded two-year olds from referred families and the school works closely with the Council and with parents to help these children.

The Trustees provide their professional skills and services as unpaid volunteers in order to retain fees at a minimum. They all visit the nursery on a regular basis and are available for consultation.

Activities

The Millington Road Nursery School provides a fun and caring environment for children, which we believe is critical to children’s development.

We know that personal, social and emotional development, with plenty of opportunity to progress physical skills are crucial to a child’s wellbeing. Alongside this, nurturing respect and understanding about life, community, culture and environment are all built into our curriculum, which allows children to learn at their own pace and build their self-esteem.

The Nursery offers opportunities for children based on their interests to experiment and explore, extending ideas and vocabulary. This builds on their understanding of science, history and geography, with links in creative activities.

We are delighted to be able to offer the children who attend our Nursery School a weekly visit from our storyteller. We also have puppet performances and promote languages.

Millington Road Nursery School follows the Early Years Foundation Stage. We are inspected by Ofsted and our quality of education is rated outstanding.

The Nursery has achieved an Eco School Silver Certificate for following environmentally friendly policies in the school and promoting their wider use in the community. It was also awarded the higher Green Flag status, the first nursery school in the area to achieve this.  An Eco Committee of staff, trustees and parents continues to ensure that green policies are continued.
