Motion Sickness was founded by a group of Cambridge School of Art/Anglia Ruskin graduates in 2018, all with their own fine art practices and the opinion that diverse contemporary art was not being shown in Cambridge.
In larger cities it's a lot easier to see new contemporary art - but transport costs make it inaccessible for many. Motion Sickness Project Space primarily aims to bring diverse emerging art into the heart of Cambridge, welcoming everyone - passers-by, shoppers, families, students, tourists, people experiencing homelessness - and providing them the chance to regularly see new artwork.
Our goal is to exhibit the work of artists who aren't already in the spotlight - artists of colour, working class artists, and LGBTQ+ artists in particular. We're the only non-commercial, non-University-owned art gallery in Cambridge.
As well as bringing in art from around the UK, we regularly schedule shows that bring together new and emerging artists from around Cambridge, offering all who volunteer with us the chance to exhibit. We want recent arts graduates in Cambridge to see that they don't need to travel to London to see a great show.
Our impact is expanding the art scene of Cambridge beyond spaces owned and run by the University. We provide a space for people to meet, network and experience new work, and regularly programme community events such as talks, workshops and socials.
To meet our objectives of broadening access to contemporary art in Cambridge, we:
