Moss Side Fire Station Boxing Club was founded in 2008. The club has a committee of 10 volunteers, who work alongside the 20 coaches and administration staff. On an average week the club has around 350 young people attend the activities which include boxing coaching and fitness sessions.
We are based on an active fire station site at the heart of a socially and economically deprived area with a high number of disaffected youth. Our volunteer run club provides a facility that offers poor and disadvantaged youths an alternative from street crime and gang membership. We aim to engage with socially excluded, marginalised and vulnerable groups who are currently underrepresented in the community and pride ourselves on inclusion for all.
This brings young people into the club and we work on making their experience into a positive and potentially life-changing one.
The organisation open the gym 7 days a week. Monday to Friday every evening with some afternoon classes for the local University and we also work off site with a mobile boxing ring that we take into schools to recruit new members.
We essentially have three kinds of sessions.
Competitive Boxing
Recreational boxing based fitness sessions
School Engagement sessions
The mentoring happens as part of the coaching sessions and include individual training plans, leadership development, where the youngsters get the opportunity to lead warm ups and cool downs under the guidance of qualified coaches and social development.
We have worked hard since 2008 to produce something the community are proud of and this is the next stage in ensuring that we are able to expand and continuingly engage the local community, breaking down barriers and changing culture locally.
