Eastfield is an area around 4 miles south of Scarborough, centered on a large housing development 70 years old, and now expanding quickly with the building of many new houses nearby. There has been a library there since 1956 and it is an important resource for local people who find it difficult to travel to Scarborough town centre. As well as books it has computers free to use, free wi-fi and sources of information.
In April 2017 the Charity Volunteer group More Than Books took over the running of Eastfield Library from North Yorkshire County Council and started to turn it into a Community Hub. Without this action, the library might have closed.
In 2018 we secured a grant from local funding organisations to develop further with a focus on Wellbeing. Core objectives are:
More Than Books consists of a team of friendly volunteers working alongside people from other organisations to run the library and to offer events and activities to the community in Eastfield and surrounding villages, in support of the objectives.
More Than Books has built up a great team of Trustees and volunteers; now we need more people to help expand our range of activities. And there really is so much more than books!
