Objectives

Freeing people from the chains of debt. No matter how much debt someone is in, there are always things that can be done to help.

People who took a deep breath and came to us for help said:

'I can't believe the service you give', 'You are our angels!' and 'I was in a fog, but now I can see light'.

We've helped people who were desperate, unloved, feeling that there was nowhere to turn and suicidal. We've totally released people from debt and helped in all sorts of other ways too.
We're a debt advice centre in West Leicester offering absolutely free help to anyone who needs it.
We weren't trained when we started - we picked it up along the way with lots of free training through our affiliation to national debt advice charity Community Money Advice.
We're all volunteers, and the centre is based at the Church of the Martyrs, Leicester: we're Christians, but we don't go on about it. We prefer to demonstrate loving service to our community. When our clients realise we are volunteers, they are astonished. One said 'Why would you do this for someone like me?' The work we do is fascinating - every client is different, and the cases are absorbing. You will learn a lot of new and useful stuff, and know that you are making a real difference to some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

Activities

At Money Matters Leicester we help people with debt problems. We've stopped bailiffs, stopped evictions, defended a money claim in a court process, increased people's benefits income, applied for grants for clients, got debts written off, arranged insolvency and generally helped clients to make a new start. It's a privilege to be able to make such a huge difference to people's lives: people who are often desperate and sometimes feel as if they are at the bottom of the pile. We're there for them.

We're Christians (but we don't go on about it and we're not fussed if you aren't or if you practise another religion - we like everybody - we ask that you are at least sympathetic to Christian belief) and see our volunteering as a way to serve our community with practical help. We have time for clients, whereas other local services often don't.

We go the extra mile for clients (from all backgrounds / religions / no religion - we're here for everyone), and make a real difference to their lives.
