Objectives

Money A+E's vision is to transform peoples lives through the provision of money advice and educational services.

Our objectives are to:

- increase people's financial knowledge, skills and confidence

- to strengthen the economical resilience of the local community

- to support in money related campaign issues

We are a money advice and education social enterprise currently operating in the London Boroughs of Lambeth and Newham. We provide money advice and education programmes and services to residents in the local community from the ages of 8 years up to pensionable age.

Through our work over 80% of the residents that attended our workshops in the last 12 months were from the BAME community. The common profile denominator was that the majority had low incomes; were out-of-work, in receipt of in-work benefits and were struggling to maintain their rent payments and general living costs.

Characteristics of our beneficiaries include people with low financial literacy skills and a poor understanding of how the welfare reform changes, including universal credit could and are affecting their financial circumstances.

Through a lack of financial knowledge they are unable to make informed choices in regards to selecting suitable credit products and are not aware of high interest and the potential consequences of using payday loan lenders, which populate the local high streets.

They are suffering from wellbeing issues such as anxiety, depression and even mental health as a consequence of their economic circumstances. Some through struggling to maintain their tenancies are at threat of eviction and homelessness.

Residents find out about our services through word of mouth from our partners and existing beneficiaries, general marketing and our existing Money programmes.

Activities

To meet our objectives our activities are:

- one to one debt / benefits advice and casework

- community and school peer to peer (ASDAN accredited) money mentoring programmes

- training frontline staff and volunteers in the community to become guidance giving and signposting money champions,

- money education workshops that raise welfare reform awareness and teaches practical money management skills,

- an e-newsletter providing the latest money news and tips for subscribers

- community events that support in increasing local people's motivation and community cohesion.

- as a member of Citizens UK we campaign on issues that are related to money and the community such as London Living Wage Campaign and Good Jobs Campaign. These activities are run to advise, educate, support and enable residents to take control of their financial lives.
