Objectives

The Mill is an independent community centre at the heart of Walthamstow, dedicated to helping all local people make the most of their talents and skills. We provide space for local people to run and attend meetings, events and classes, and rent office space to like-minded local businesses and charities. Our strapline at the Mill is ‘People Making Things Happen’. This reflects our objective to bring people together, mobilising their energy and talents to enrich our community life. We are largely run by volunteers along Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) principles.

Activities

The Mill is Walthamstow's living room, open 6 days a week, for 48 weeks a year, for people to drop in, ask for advice, chat to friends and use our children's room and honesty library.About 60 -70 volunteers a week make this happen. It's a busy and exciting space: in 2014 to 2015 there were 14 regular Mill groups, run by their members, amongst the total 113 groups run by local people who book our two meeting rooms. Creativity is an important strand of our work: our Living Room hosts a series of exhibitions by local people year-round. All Mill groups have to share our objectives of bringing people together across the community. In addition we run regular events, and work in partnership with other local organisations to improve our local area.
