Our mission is to listen and understand the needs of people with learning disabilities and autism and their families, empowering them to make their voices heard, actively representing and fighting for their interests, and creating and delivering the services they need.
Formed in 1964, Merton Mencap is a registered charity providing support and services for children, young people and adults with a learning disability and their family carers in the London Borough of Merton. We are affiliated to the national charity, Royal Mencap Society, but we are not a branch. We are an independent organisation, responsible for raising all our own funds.
For people with learning disability, our principle aim is to support them to be safer, healthier and to participate in the mainstream as far as possible. Our services help them learn and develop skills, try new leisure activities and enjoy life.
For family carers, our support is intended to help them feel less isolated and more resilient, and to have a say in the design and delivery of local services which affect them and the person they care for. Through our services, we support family carers to help them to have a life of their own.
Our work includes raising awareness of the rights and needs of people with a learning disability and their families. We work with local health and social services, the education authority, and other organisations to improve and develop services in Merton.
