Objectives

The Trust vision is to promote for the benefit of the public the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment of the Upper Mersey Estuary and related areas.

Our aims are to:

  • be the Upper Mersey Estuary’s most active and influential wildlife champion,
  • ensure the Mersey Gateway Project is a visionary example of environmental management for future major construction projects,
  • improve the natural environment around the bridge and through the Upper Mersey Estuary on both land and water,
  • increase the bird and wildlife population of the Upper Mersey Estuary over the next 30 years, and
  • secure additional funding for environmental initiatives in the area over the next 30 years.

Activities

Our activities include:

  • Environmental monitoring: continuation of data collection post construction of the Mersey Gateway bridge for at least 5 years. This includes water quality, hydrodynamics, aquatic ecology, terrestrial ecology
  • Implementation of saltmarsh restoration plan (management of 42ha of saltmarsh)
  • Living Laboratory: guided and supported by a Research Board of local experts, we aim to provide an area of active research on a variety of subjects, ranging from undergraduate studies and placements to PhD projects.
  • Projects: project work relating to our aims and objectives, e.g. plastic collections on saltmarsh, provision of information to the public, bird and vegetation surveys
  • Community & Education: Public engagements such as talks, walks, etc.
