Objectives

Media Defence provides legal help to journalists, citizen journalists and independent media outlets around the world. With access to high quality legal support free of charge, they can continue their journalistic work, holding those in power to account. To date, we have supported over 900 cases, helping hundreds of journalists in over 110 countries.

Activities

We provide legal help in three interconnected ways:

1. Emergency defence. We provide grants to help cover legal fees and provide pro bono legal support.

2. Strategic litigation. We take strategic cases to improve the regulatory environment in which the media operates.

3. Local legal capacity building. We build local legal capacity through training of lawyers and grant making to organisations providing legal support to media in the highest need countries.
